Sensory Waterproof Chair Bean Bag
At GreatBeanBags, we’ve been manufacturing sensory bean bags, in our Nottingham UK facility, for many years, and sell a large number through our retail partners. They can be found both in the homes of families like yours, and in care and education settings.
We have learnt how incredibly difficult life can be for children (and the families of children) with sensory processing difficulties and the neurodevelopmental disorders of which they are a feature, and are proud to offer a product to help children navigate their hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity to texture/feel at home.
What is a Sensory Bean Bag?
A sensory bean bag is a bean bag specifically designed to meet the needs of children with sensory processing difficulties.
The construction of our models, and the materials chosen, provide your child with tactile feedback and deep pressure sensory input, to help reduce their anxiety, discomfort, frustration, and support relaxation.
Each model in our range of sensory bean bags is made from a waterproof, antimicrobial fabric used in the healthcare space, and features taped seams and tensioned zip flaps to block the ingress of fluids.
This technical textile (which we go into further detail about below) and sealed design, makes our sensory models urine-resistant and easy to wipe down. Accidents are no problem!
Why Sensory Bean Bags are Great for Children With SPD
- Bean bags envelop the sitter, and moulds around the body. This creates even pressure input throughout the body, which can help to regulate your child’s sensory responses.
- Our sensory bean bags provide deep touch pressure input, which helps to support body awareness and proprioceptive feedback for children with SPD.
- They’re soft and soothing to the touch, and low noise when moving around on them, offering both tactile and auditory sensory benefits.
- Lightweight, and featuring no hard plastics or similarly hard material in their construction, our sensory models are child-safe, floor friendly, and highly portable, making them easy to move around the home as required.
- Sensory bean bags can help to support your child’s focus. It’s understood that sitting more comfortably, in a way that enables a level of movement, can maximise concentration for children with sensory processing difficulties, making these models a great choice for homework time.
- Similarly, the supremely comfortable and calming nature of a bean bag makes them an excellent choice to support your child’s relaxation and decompression. A bedroom/playroom essential for children with SPD.
- Our sensory models are available in a wide range of colours and designs, making them visually stimulating.
Our Range of Models
We offer four sensory bean bag models, which are each manufactured from our waterproof antimicrobial fabric:
- Sensory Chair - available in 5 sizes ranging from small to XXL.
- Bench bean bag - better suited to reclined positions, also available in 5 sizes.
- Slab bean bag (floor cushion) - available in two sizes, small and medium.
- Stool - available in a single standard size.
Each model is available in 11 colours, ranging from green to yellow, from orange to blue, to grey, brown, black, white and beyond, so you can find a bean bag that is as attractive as it is helpful.
More About the Material
The technical fabric used across our entire range of sensory bean bags is waterproof, flame retardant to relevant standards, and resistant to damage with an abrasion resistance measurement of 200,000 Martindale.
It’s also antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial, and will repel bacteria like, Aspergillus Niger, E Coli, Altinata, Salmonella, Penicillium, Staphylococcus Aureus, Cladosporium Herbarum, to help protect your child’s health.
The fabric is easy to clean, made from polyurethane (fabric face) and polycotton (fabric back), and should be wiped regularly with a damp cloth or sponge, using warm water and a mild alkaline-free soap.

SEN/Sensory Bean Bags FAQs
What is sensory processing disorder?
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a neurological condition impacting how some people respond to sensory information.
The condition may make the individual overly responsive to not only senses like touch, sound, vision, smell and taste, but also balance and movement, body awareness and internal body signals. While it can be a standalone diagnosis, it is commonly a feature of conditions like autism and ADHD.
Therapeutic support is available in the community, and sensory equipment that can be used at home, can be incredibly impactful in helping children to navigate their sensory challenges. For example, our sensory bean bags help children to navigate their hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity to texture/feel, and provide them with tactile feedback and deep pressure sensory input to reduce anxiety, discomfort, frustration and support relaxation.
How can I help my child with sensory issues?
To help a child with sensory issues, explore sensory equipment they can use at home related to their specific sensory challenges.
These items might include fidget toys, balance boards and body rockers, sensory mats and wall panels, sensory lighting, touchscreens and projectors, sensory dens, and sensory seating like the bean bags in our sensory range. (We breakdown how these items can support particular sensory challenges in this blog post).
Sensory support and therapy can also be found in the community through both national and private healthcare providers.
What are sensory items?
