The World’s Most Relaxing Songs

The World’s Most Relaxing Songs

We know just how important it is to relax, it’s why we make the greatest bean bags to kick back and chill on. But, with that in mind and after what has likely been one of the most stressful years on record for most of us, we wanted to help those out who are looking to just relax and switch off over Christmas!

So, we have put our heads together, crunched the numbers and have found the formula for the world’s most relaxing song...

With the help of data sourced from Spotify, we analysed over 2,200 songs from playlists that included the word ‘relax’, ‘relaxing’, ‘chill’ and ‘chilling’ to find the top 50 most common ‘relaxing’ songs, the top 10 as chosen by the public, include:

Top 10 Most Common 'Relaxing' Songs
Passenger - Let Her Go
Colbie Caillat - Bubbly
James Arthur - Can I Be Him
Norah Jones - Come Away With Me
Damien Rice - Cannonball
Taylor Swift - Cardigan
Ed Sheeran - Bloodstream
Lewis Capaldi - Bruises
Olivia O'Brien - Complicated
OneRepublic - Apologize

Using our list of the top 50 most selected songs to relax to, we then set out on finding the average beats per minute (BPM), most common key and time signatures of the full 50, this then gave us the ‘formula for the world’s most relaxing song’, which is:

Beats Per Minute - 113
Key - C
Time Signature - 4/4

When we matched this formula against the biggest songs of 2020, we found the following:

The Top Most Relaxing Songs of 2020 (Descending In Similarity From Formula)
Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved
Doja Cat - Say So
Dua Lipa - Break My Heart
Lewis Capaldi - Before You Go
Lewis Capaldi - Bruises
Harry Styles - Falling
Halsey - You Should Be Sad

Also, as it’s Christmas, we still want to get into the festive spirit while we chill out, so we also compared the formula to the top Christmas hits and we found a PERFECT MATCH!

The Most Relaxing Christmas Songs

Boney M’s ‘Mary’s Boy Child’ matches the formula exactly, so if you want to relax over Christmas, forget 2020 and keep in the festive spirit, this is the song for you!

Close runner ups, just one beat out from the formula were Band Aid ‘14’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ and Michael Buble’s ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’.

If you have some excited little ones refusing to settle down for the night, play one of these songs, sit them on one of our kids bean bags and they’ll be sure to get all sleepy for the big day!

Commenting on how music can help us to relax, psychologist Cristina Barcelo said:

"Music is scientifically proven to have a special effect on the brain, the body and even the emotional aspects of the human being,"

"If you’re feeling anxious, take at least five minutes of your day to sit down, take a couple of deep breaths and engage in relaxing music, it’s going to help you relax and increase the oxygen level of your body, which is also what creates the calming effect in the body, mind, and spirit."

So there you have it, if you’re looking to relax this Christmas, you can pop Boney M on and sink into your bean bag of choice to forget 2020 and all its events.
