Teenage Bedroom Ideas

When looking for teenage bedroom ideas, there's plenty to take into account. For many teens, a bedroom is more than just a place to sleep. It’s a place for them to relax, hang out with friends, and study (or so they say). When investing time and money into redesigning their space, you’ll likely be considering the longevity of the design.

With all this to consider, designing a bedroom space for your teenage boy or girl can feel like a daunting task. If you’re unsure where to start, we’ve put together some helpful tips and ideas to help get you thinking of practical ways to decorate your teen's bedroom giving them a space to enjoy as they mature.

  1. Get your teenager involved in the design process
  2. Opt for a neutral base with pops of colour
  3. Include decor that reflects their personality
  4. Choose practical furniture
  5. A space to hangout
  6. A space to study
  7. Organisation and storage to hide the clutter
  8. Customisable mood lighting

1. Get your teenager involved in the design process

Whether you’re designing a teenage boy’s bedroom or a teenage girl’s bedroom, a good place to start is in the planning. Whilst it might be tempting to jump in and take the lead on the design, it’s really important that their space reflects them and their personality so you can be sure they’ll love it for years to come.

Before hitting the shops, you could encourage them to create a mood board to plan out their ideas and designs. Social media platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram are great places for bedroom design inspiration. This is a great chance for them to get creative and plan by putting ideas for their bedroom down on paper.

Giving them ownership of the project is a great way to instil responsibility to help them understand budgets when decorating a room. It will also give you a chance to work on the project together as you’ll be able to offer feedback on their choices.

2. Opt for a neutral base with pops of colour

When designing any room, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is what colour to paint the walls. Choosing a neutral colour pallet on the walls and furniture will ensure the longevity of the design. You could then add pops of colour through switchable decor such as bedding and soft furnishings. Trends come and go and teenagers are prone to quickly change their minds but these elements can be easily changed and updated as they grow.

3. Include decor that reflects their personality

For a teenager, a bedroom is a space that reflects them and who they are. Including and displaying items that reflect their personality and hobbies that they’re passionate about can achieve this. You could decorate plain walls with posters from their favourite band, football shirts from their favourite team or photos of their favourite memories with their friends.

4. Choose practical furniture

Investing in new furniture can be costly and you’ll want to ensure that the furniture you include in your teen’s bedroom design will last them for years to come. Choosing furniture in neutral tones such as white or black will suit a range of teenage bedroom ideas and there will be less chance of your teen outgrowing the design. Additionally, a bed with a pull-out spare bed can be a great option so your teenager can enjoy sleepovers with their friends, or if they need a larger bed in the future.

5. A space to hang out

If your teen enjoys spending time in their room hanging out with friends, you could consider including some seating options in the room. Bean bags are a great choice if the space is limited as they are often more compact and can be moved and stored easily when not needed. GreatBeanBags offers a range of bean bags to suit a variety of decor styles including classic bean bag chairs, wedgie bean bags and even gaming bean bags for teens that enjoy spending time on their gaming console.

6. A space to study

Incorporating a study space into your teenage bedroom design is a great way to give them a quiet place to study away from distractions. Opting for a desk with inbuilt storage will also help to maximise the use of the space whilst allowing them to organise their things to help them stay more focused and productive. The desk can also function as a dresser or place for them to play their video games if that’s what they enjoy.

7. Organisation and storage to hide the clutter

Including lots of storage solutions such as shelving, drawers and bookcases is a great way to ensure the space is clear of clutter especially when looking for small teenage bedroom ideas. Utilising under-bed storage is a great option to keep their space tidy and organised without taking up additional space in their room. The storage doesn’t need to be hidden either. By adding shelving, they can display items such as photos, memorabilia, candles and plants. These are all great ways to liven up a room whilst adding a personal touch.

8. Customisable mood lighting

Customisable mood lighting is an easy way to add practical lighting whilst also adding a pop of colour that will suit a variety of teenage bedroom ideas. There are lots of options when it comes to mood lighting without the need for re-wiring or installing new light fittings. You could add self-adhesive strip lights along a headboard, under shelving or behind a desk. Or you could opt for a colour-changing light bulb in a lamp they already have. With endless colours for them to choose from, your teen will be able to adjust the lighting depending on the time of day and their mood.
